Why don't you seriously attempt to be self employed. Quitting my job was the best thing I've ever done. I have many people depending on me too, so it was sink or swim and I was determined not to sink. If you're any good at what you do, word of mouth will spread and you will be successful. If not then why get a job doing it? Find something else.

Never lie on your resume. List a good objectives with education, the skills. Check out www.monster.com Resume advice. I would try temporary agents, they are really good at helping with getting jobs. You may not get what you want, but at least will have some income incoming. The job market these days are slim and people are going to hire whomever they want to. I actually went to a temporary agent and I have an interview schedule next week. I would recommend changing my resume around and post on it job websites and temporary services sites. I put I was an hair sylist for the last two years. The descriptions I would greet clients upon their arrival. Answers phones and did some scheudling, made appointments, filing, etc. The objective I would use is something like this: A positon in the Administration career field. Seeking a Administrative Assistant position within a company where I can make future advancements. You will get a job. Hang in there! Best Wishes!

First thing you shouldn't lie in a resume as once you are caught you might gain a bad reputation and hence loses the job on the spot. There is nothing wrong with being self-employed for 2 years. You just gotta give yourself some confidence that is all.

A resume is simply your ad to get you an interview, it's the interview that gets you the job. Make the truth as flattering as possible, it can't have big lies or it falls apart at the interview stage. The job that wasn't suitable, you can make it suitable, if it was for rehab or something you can just leave that fact out. There is no rule about omission, you can even leave out dates after your last 3 or 4 jobs. When you get an interview don't grovel, try to be happy, remember if you're not dead you have plenty to be grateful for and you're free till you get the job so just keep plodding away and you will score in the end.

Self employed seems like the better way to fill in the blanks. This economy is terrible for job seekers. The problem is probably not your resume. The problem is the times we live in.

Maybe you could change the format of your resume so that if you do put that job down, or choose to eliminate it, it won't stand out as much? I.E. I think theres a format called functional and you list education, then skills and then you could list your jobs just briefly at the end...
I wouldn't choose to lie because it could hurt you later and/or they may ask you a lot of questions about that self employment that you could really botch if you're making up stuff on the spot.

I would not lie on a resume, getting a job is hard itself, either you continue to put that you were self employed, or continue to be self employed, chances are that you are going to find someone that thinks it is admirable that you have the drive and ambition to work for yourself.

I'm sorry you're having a tough time getting a job. That sucks.
Don't lie on your resume, though. It could catch up to you. Not only could it get you fired, but word could get around to other employers. Sounds a little far fetched, but I've seen it happen.
Have you tried temp agencies?

I feel for you. Unfortunately I have seen several co workers lose their jobs after a month or so when it was found that their resumes contained falsified information.
