The dealer will have a "vats box" to test the key and code.... it is used for diagnosing vats related concerns in gm vehicles..... it has different settings on it for the different key codes. just plug it in to the two wire connector from the cars harness behind the knee bolster where the connector plugs from the ignition cylinder. then just turn the key on each of the 15 settings ... the car will start when you select the correct code ... then just have a key with the correct code cut from the current ignition key that came with the new lock cylinder. it is simple really i have done several myself. hope this helps.

the only problem you will have is locating the vats box in the vehicle so the dealer can cross reference the code on the box to the new key blank a locksmith is not going to do anything for you but cut new keys from the old ones you might be able to call the dealer and see what the charge to vats scan the box with there tech2 scanner

There is only one of fifteen possible resistor values the vats module learns the specific value when new any good GM. dealer parts dept in your area should have a list of values then all you have to do is go to radio shack and get the resistors and try them across the connector until you find the right one (remember to wait 4 minutes before trying the next resistor) then return to dealer to buy the correct key

some of the higher tech locksmith's have equipment to work on vats systems and make new keys. not just cut them.

I would call some of them in the phone book.
