Could be a bad break booster

2006-10-04 13:51:30 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

you have a vacuum leak, pay no attention to the posts about brake issues. Without touching the car, I cant tell you what is leaking, but there is a leak. With the engine running & the hood open, listen for a loud hissing noise. pay attention to the area near the master cylinder, if you lost brake booster it may be real close to it. If not have a professional look at. But they are right it is unsafe, you can white knuckle the steering wheel & still have a hard time stopping it.....

The throttle sticks and the brakes don't work. That's a fun car. I agree with the brake booster if both problems are related to each other. If they are two separate problems, could be a few things to look at - brake master cylinder, sticking throttle cable/linkage, or carburetor needs a rebuild. If I was a gambler, I'd put money on something being wrong with the brake booster.

Accelerate on it's own....probably a choke problem (carburetor) Breaks won't work...probably the master cylinder, wheel cylinder, or both. Brake booster might be a problem, yes, but the brakes would still work some. Good luck. Really need more info.

Sounds like the di9aphram in the brake booster is leaking. When you apply the brakes air goes through the diaphram into the intake manifold giving the engine more air just like you stepping on the accellerator. Get it fixed or don't drive the car.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. The leaner air mixture would cause the engine to surge causing your accelleration problem, and the loss of vacuum will give you lost power assist in your booster for the master cylinder. still need more info to help
good luck

Vacuum leak, particularly in the line to the brake (note the spelling) booster.  A vacuum leak will make the engine surge (like opening the throttle) and the reduced vacuum will make the power brakes less effective.

Have it checked out before you hit something or someone.

Its an old car. Dozens of things could be the cause, these are serious problems, have it checked by a competent mechanic or don't drive it.
