boot first? I do not have XP on the master hd and I need to install the OS; however, all I have is the xp upgrade. The master hd has nothing on it for windows to scan for a validation to proceed...

Bios has nothing to with slave and master other than identifying them. You must set jumpers on the drives to differentiate between slave and master. You must have an operating system on the master drive.
I have never found instructions anywhere to boot from the slave, but you can partition the master and put two OSs on it and boot from either one.

You will need to set your jumpers on the hard drive itself. One should be set as master and other as slave (see diagram on the hard drive or check the manufacturer's website). Once this is done the computer will detect which is which.
