Guppies are very happy to be together all the time. There shouldn't be any problem. You should get a book.
Walmart doesn't take the best care of the fishies. They have too much other stuff and don't really care if the fish live or die, and don't bother to make sure the water is the best quality. Better to go to a specialty fish store. Even Petco or Petsmart is better, but not as good as a small privately owned store.
Small stores hire knowledgable people who can answer questions and give you accurate information on fish and supplies.
Buy their stuff too, you will pay a little more, but it's worth it for the knowledgable staff.
Good Luck

Guppies make great community fish but your should only keep one male for every three females as the stress of constantly being chased by a male may cause the females to get sick.
Fish tanks house beneficial bacteria that turn fish waste (ammonia) into nitrites and then other bacteria convert the nitrites into less harmful nitrates that are kept from reaching toxic levels by weekly water changes (20% of the water). These bacteria grow on all the surfaces' area and it is much harder for fish to thrive when there isn't any substrate to increase the surface area like in walmart.
Walmart fish are also transported over long distances (while not being fed and no fresh oxygen) and this causes them to get extremely weak and they are unable to fight against sickness.

I know someone who breeds guppies. One thing I noticed about how he rear them is that the water is always clear and he doesn't feed them much. Both male and female mixes well even though they sometimes chase each other. One more thing, the next time you buy guppies from Walmarts, do not immediately open the plastic packet, just place the packet on top of your tank for 5 minutes. Make sure you pour in 1/3 of the water from the packet into your tank. Sometimes new fishes cannot get used to drastic change in water condition.

just to add to the first answer... Guppies have became my favorite of all the fish i have owned over the years i totally agree with shopping at a privately owned shop they will take the time to answer any questions you may have. I started with 3 guppies in my tank i now have about 20 you should know they are live bearers and if you keep enough foliage in your tank they will breed successfully so i suggest 1 maybe 2 females at the most so you don't get over populated if this happens talk with your pet shop and they might can take some of them off your hands hope you enjoy your new fish

First - do EVER buy fish from Walmart or Petco or Petsmart (they tend to have a lot of diseased fish has been my experience).
Guppies are very community oriented. You will find some to be more aggressive with each other than others, but they are the Rabbits of the fish world, and will breed nearly every 28 days.

yes they actually live pretty well in a small tank...both sexes can also live together quite comfortably but they do better with more females than males...and even though many people say they are easy to take care of, i always find mine dying more often than i expect too and i know a thing or two about fish (2 freshwater tanks and a 75 gal. saltwater). sometimes you can make out good though i just think petstores like petsmart and walmart dont take the best of care for them when they are in the store therefore they dont live very long

Guppies are community fish, so yes they can go together, and no they wont kill each other....You'll probably end up with babies... All Walmart fish die fast, at least everybody I personally know agrees. They dont know how to care for them... They just sell them. Not a good place to get fish

I don't know much about guppies except they breed like crazy...if you are just startin out with ur aquarium, go with walmart fish...90 day guarantee, no quesitons asked....once established, then go to a more fish oriented small store...the ones in my town however, give you a 3 day guarantee...that kinda sucks!
