It's probably because you know that you're not supposed to think about sex in a house of God, and that makes thinking about more appealing. Don't give in to your thoughts and just pray. If all else fails, start wearing a cilice belt around your thigh like the members of Opus Dei do. It'll counteract the desires of the flesh.
Well, I guess it's time to get a cilice belt.

No, it's the same effect as someone telling you not to think about Polar Bears - once they do, you can't think about anything else.
Thinking about sex in church is not as sure a way to hell as having sex in church, although my theology is a little fuzzy on this issue (& many others)

I wouldn't think that thoughts of sex, regardless where they occur, is a path to hell. Your sexual instincts are, after all, given you by God in the first place. I must say, though, that what you've said intrigues me. If you have a priest whose sermons inspire erotic fantasies, you must have a standing room only turn out every time the doors open.

the devil could be present anywhere even inside the church. the closer you get to God, the devil become more intense in capturing your attention away from God. if you yield to devil's temptation, you lose. you know where losers go...hell.
