Okay, when I say "soundboard" I mean, like, when you call someone that, not when you use it when you're talking about music or anything. Please help!

A soundboard is a device created in Macromedia Flash that plays many short sound clips. They generally take sound clips said by celebrities and combine them into one flash creation. They are most often used in prank calls, when the caller uses the soundboard to imitate someone famous. The individual on the other end of the phone thinks they are actually talking to a real person. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the first celebrity to debut on a Flash Soundboard, soon the Arnold prank calls were spread thoughtout the internet. Arnold Schwarzennegger's 2nd prank call to Gateway is still considered one of the most hilarious soundboard calls. The concept of making soundboards with celebrity voices has expanded to the likes of Mr. T, Dave Chappelle, Joe Pesci, Homer Simpson, and many, many more.

Certain software is required to create soundboards. Adobe/Macromedia may be the best to use.

Once upon a time, many years ago, there were no microphones or amplifiers, or PA systems. This presented a problem for ministers who wanted to be heard throughout a congregation. So there you would have the church with the pulpit up front where the minister stands and and all the rows of pews out before it. Then they would suspend a flat, wide wooden board from the ceiling above the pulpit and above the ministers head. So he would stand up there and speak with this "sound board" or sounding board above his head. His voice, acoustically speaking, would bounce off the board and out and down to the congregation to be heard rather than floating up to the high ceiling. Quite an ingenious little invention for the 1700s. From this we get the modern usage of soundboard or sounding board.

ex. I need to talk to you. Let me use you as a sounding board and bounce a few ideas off of you.

When you say something to perhaps someone you know and they will tell you how it sounds :
E.g I've got some ideas can I use you as a soundboard?

The other person listens to the ideas and comments perhaps on how his ideas may or may not work or how they could be improved. (This person is the soundboard)

I think you mean "sounding board," as in "using someone as a sounding board."

It means that you're bouncing ideas off of someone. Usually it means that you already have an idea of what you want to do, how you want to proceed, etc., but you're bouncing the idea off of another person to see what they think and if there are any circumstances you haven't taken into account.

It simply means to keep quiet and for the other person to talk and voice everyone's opinion.
