Not from california but I used to own a ferret and I do not know why california will not allow ferrets. They are no more harmful than a hamster. If this ferret legistation is to allow ferrets to be owned in california then you have my support.

This is specifically for WANDERMIND
You don't really know what you're talking about, I can prove this because you have contradicted yourself by saying "The risk is high they will die on the loose" If they were a wild animal they would be able to survive in the wild! Duh!?
I live in Manchester, England and I have a ferret who is NOT vicious and is most DEFINITELY domesticated. If I lived in California I would support the ferret legislation without a doubt.
Good luck to all you fuzzie owners in California - hope you get the bill passed!! x

This guy who says that ferrets aren't domestic animals is downright incorrect. He is probably thinking of the black-footed ferret which is completely different from the type of ferret kept as a pet. Black-footed ferrets are indeed endangered but it is not because people keep them as pets- it is due to loss of habitat and a decline in their main foodsource which is praire dogs.
Ferrets that are kept as pets are derived from the european polecat. It is true that they can be nippy and steal things, but they can't cause nearly as much damage as a cat or dog. Most domestic ferrets don't exceed 3 lbs and I would really like to see one take on an entire chicken coop and not get pecked to death. They are good pets if you know what to expect but many people do not realize that they need the type of training and attention you would give to a larger pet. California is crazy. I've seen on TV people in CA with pet cougars, but ferrets are illegal. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Anyway, these guys need to get their facts straight and understand what animal they are even talking about.

Psh. I have 2 ferrets and I live in So Cal. I know plenty of people that own ferrets and they cannot believe that they are illegal in CA. For what reasons? Because they are "untame, wild, ferocious, will harm any other animal". These are not frickin wolverines but cute and cuddly playful little animals that if you play with for a day, you will get hooked. They make little squeeky sounds which is called "dook" and they go wild in a fun playful way.

No I wouldn't. As a pet store owner I know that If they were to become legal they would be a nuisance with in a year. For the first year we could sell them for what ever we want. Then when people realize that they are nippy and steal things and are not good with young kids all hell would break loose. They would be running around CA like stray cats and dogs. They are capable of killing and eating a bald eagle. They can attack cats and small dogs. They will kill chicken coups without eating a bird. And they are a threat to our lifestock and native wildlife. They need to remain illegal. But, if they did become legal I would have them in my store.

No, because they are endangered in the wild and they need special care. Ferrets in proper habitat would be justified in a breeding program coordinated with other ferret farms to prevent in-breeding. It's not fair to keep ferrets in a home. They are not suitable house pets.
Ferret enthusiasts swear up and down that there is a domestic species. NOT SO. Ferrets are wild by nature, and can be tamed but they are rambunctious roughiens. Ferret have become popular since the 70's. They have been kept as hunting assistants since medieval times. That does not qualify them as domestic. They are tamed like a tiger can be tame.
Many arguments are used to keep ferrets, but I think it is unfair to keep them unless you have a natural setting for them to romp around. Ferrets have a high risk of escaping and they do not do well in neighborhoods. The risk is high they will die on the loose. There are many other arguments to protect the animal from novice casual pet enthusiasts. I am personally very much against owning wild animals. It will do more to harm the wild populations. Although there are breeding farms and a market, these farms also abuse the breeding animals.
If on the other hand you have a proper setting for the animals and technical qualifications to maintain the animals I would agree to efforts to save the species. I don't know about zoo's. They seem to get away with abuse of wild animals too. In short, the qualifications, permits, and regular inspections, might be acceptable. Ferrets are not like cute cuddly rabbits. Sorry, start with hamsters or rabbits and work your way up.
Why not donate money to the zoo and visit the wild animals there?

Yes I would, but they are big time rodent eaters and might endanger the native squirrels and stuff that live here.
