555 is a reserved number, and few actual phone numbers are assigned to use it. Sometimes movies do use valid phone numbers, but it's usually a 555 number to avoid problems. A certain range is reserved for fictional use, and others can actually be used. Not all people making movies are aware of this range, and think that it's just the entire exchange, so to my understanding they do sometimes use some 555 numbers that actually can call someone. Wikipedia says that 555-1212 in some places is directory assistance.

I hate it when they do that because you can be all into the show or movie and then right there you're like DAMMIT that's right, this isnt real... There they go with that 555 crap. I understand the reasoning behind it but how do you think all the 867-5309 people out there feel? lol Take some of the slack off them and let some other people get a prank once in awhile.

Very early on in the movie and tv business it was decided to use '555' as a prefix as it didn't exist and therefore couldn't be assigned as an actual phone number.

555 is made up for TV and movies. It doesn't exist. If they gave an actual phone number, millions of people would be calling it for years.

It is a phony exchange that every movie, tv show, etc uses. It is not used outside of the entertainment media. Real phone numbers can't be accessed that way.

Its used to make a generic phone number. This way some knucklehead can't call and annoy a real person.
