This is a very interesting topic of discussion, to be frank I am glad that you have asked this question. To truley understand this idea we must break down the phrase. First we have the word manifest, which in laymans terms is something that is obvious, something that is is clear. Next destiny, or fate. So to put it blunlty manifest destiny is discussing an obvious fate. This fate of course was that the United States should extend from ocean to ocean. Many American felt that the US should extend their western border all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The idea itself is easy to understand, however the roots of this notion are not so apparent. In my humble opinion this idea is rooted in two major ideas/events. The first of being the Louisiana Purchase. After Jefferson's acquisition of the area in 1803 and the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804, the nation was captivated by an immense interest in all things West. It was thought that the west was the true land of oppertunity, a place where land was free and offered the full bounty of mother nature. Naturally people began to move west to capitalize on this new oppertunity. The second reason for this doctrine is based in religious thought. Many protestant sects at this time felt that the white race was superior, ergo they were entitled to the rights to this expansive pieve of land. With no regard for the native population the white man moved west and moved the indians even further west. Also at this time there was a saying of "rain follows the plow". As many people moved west accomaditing condition followed. Naturally these migrants felt that this rain was a sign from god that the heavens approved of white domination of this new land.

As you can see this idea is very simple, yet its root are some what complex. By taking this euro-centric view of history we lose sight of those groups affected by the actions of the white man. Another imporatant part of this discussion is the white mans impact on the lives of the natives. How ever that would been a whole other book.

Good luck with this one!

Oh, and another thing that person who said that Teddy Roosevelt was a big supporter of westwerd expansion is so very wrong. This idea of manifest destiny was popular during the early half of the 19th century. Roosevelt was active during the Progressvie Era, nearly 100 years later.
