when you own the company.

I have felt the urge to yell at customers, who either made me feel ignorant or feel frustrated. You should never yell at a customer. Gain control over the conversation. Knowing that you are in a position that will be knit-picked by managers who are just waiting to replace you. You need to have the caller just feel like he/she is being listened to. More than likely the caller will just need to have someone understand. Show empathy in your voice. Have an understanding of what the actual situation. Give the caller closure, meaning, let the call feel like even though you might not solve the problem but you will send his/her call to the apporpiate person(s).

I disagree that the customer is always right. When they're being completely rude to you, that's not acceptable. Unfortunately however, if you want to keep your job, you must maintain a calm composure. I wouldn't be super friendly back to them, but be polite. It's really hard, I've been there before, but you just have to suck it up and maintain your customer service personality.

There's really only so much you can do when you're working for a company, but you can get back at them by not letting them get to you and also by firmly but politiely correcting them.
You really can correct them by being strong and polite and you can tell them to calm down.
Really, if you get fired, then so what, as long as you've been honorable.

I was always told by my boss, with regards to working with/speaking to customers, to give them every opportunity to speak to you in the same tone you are speaking to them. If they continue to rant on, be rude and disrespectful - tell them you are going to transfer their call to another associate (to which they have to explain their entire situation over again) or they can call back when they've calmed down.
*works for me!!

It sucks a lot of the time . . .but the sooner they are out of your face, the better, and yelling usually doesn't help them leave faster.

If they disrespect me, I would give them one more chance to be nice. Then I would disrespect them back.
My condolences for you and your job. Been there.
