Making a living and knowing how to live are two totally separate things. I agree with the quote, especially after having lived in cultures in addition to the American culture. People in the U.S. have fewer family values than many other cultures in that the family takes a back seat to making a living, keeping a business appointment, earning money, etc. We are a country of consumers who don't know we can get by on much less.

I take to mean that what you do or how much money you make does not define who you are as a human being or what your value as a person is.
Many people define themselves by their status and position. The question you would ask yourself is if you lost your money and job, at whatever level, what would you have......?? No one can teach you how to live but few people actually live life. It cannot be taught, everyone has to decide on their own where you are headed as a person, not in society.

The part about learning how to make a living is just your normal, school type of education. The other involves the world around you. You take in everything, even unconsciously, and that teaches you "how to live." Like you know not to murder someone, because murderers are outcasts of society.

There are street smarts and book smarts. The Book smarts will train you for whatever field you pursue, but they cannot prepare you for the "streets." Only common sense and life experience can teach you the things you need to survive.

I have often wondered at this and finally shall brave to ask the question. If you do not sight the author is it a quote, or just a saying.
