Check engine light was not on before and as soon as i started it up following the month period when it was not run, the light came on after a few seconds of running. If I run it for a while will it go out or will the sensor need to be replaced?

do you know for sure that there's an o2 fault code??
If so, just replace it. o2 sensor for my car was only $15.00+/- Believe it or not the sensor is very sensitive, so DO NOT clean it with and solvents and damage it any further!!!

Don't forget to reset the computer. I usually just disconnect my battery (both cables off) and let it set for 30 mns., then I touch both cable ends together to discharge any static and reconnect.

Note: if you replace sensor and the light comes back on you have something else going on, rarely do o2 sensors burn out

Don't know for sure about the O2 sensor. Don't think so but if check engine light came on it could be for some other reason. Could be carbon in the intake manifold or even a bad vacuum hose. Have a mechanic check it out.

Sitting won't cause anything to fail. What makes you think the O² sensor is the cause of the check engine light?

try resetting the computer by dissconnecting the battery for 15 seconds.sometimes it works if it doesn't take it to professional.the dealer is usually the best because they will have the part there unless you are a mechanic,There is a special socket for the sensor.

i would try removing it and cleaning it wit a tooth brush and solvant, then reinstall it.if your computer has locked in a hard code. disconnect any one battery cable for about 5 mins. or stop by auto zone they will clear it for free

possible but not likely, its an electrical part and can malfunction at any time.
