Desitin is used for treating diaper rash and contains zinc - it helps create a barrier to protect skin from wetness. A&D can also be used for diaper rash, however it has more uses. A&D is more like bacitracin, you can put it on minor scrapes and such to help protect and heal wounds. If you are trying to treat diaper rash I suggest Desitin - the one that is 40% zinc in the purple box.

Desitin is typically used when a child has a diaper rash. A&D ointment is made with vitamins A & D and is typically used to prevent diaper rash.

I think both are skin protectants. A & D is generally colorless. Desitin is white, I think.
