I've worked with a lot of professional stand up comedians, you need a tonne of material. You need to be quick enough to cope with hecklers. You also need to be funny....

In a pub where I used to drink in there we're 3 of us that we're able to be funni, so to find the best we had a compotion, a compleate stranger wud pick random topics, and who ever out of the 3 couldn't find a joke on that subject lost, I was lucky to win, I do a lot of reserch on the net for funni's then use that idea to create new material, I would never steal material direct, however I have improved on a few joke I have come accross, a real comedian should be able to think on his feet have a routine and also be able to handle put down, pref with a few honed one liners, it can take years to get a status, try getting him to submit idea;s to radio and television, they will be very critical if he can win them over he can win any drunken audience over, its about timing and charector I find, I wish him luck and there is nothing wrong with a few old corney jokes! but keep them far and few between fresh and topical info, I do comedy material, if he needs a helping hand get him to get intouch I can point him in the right direction, good luck with his venture. remember laughter is better than medician, but try telling that to a bloke having a heart attack, as you say there was an Irish man an English man and a Scot's man ....

With old 'uns like that best advise him to stick to his amateur status. Stand up comedians need more than a few one liners, it's not easy to be funny.

Red Skelton already did that and to date.., I suppose a half million comedians after that. It was funny it its day and still funny to see the old masters doing their own schtick, but not for newer talent.
In other words - its and OLD gag.

Well that is a really old one - but a lot of comedy clubs run amateur nights - tell him to have a go, no harm in trying and its something he'll always regret if he doesn't!

i do no longer comprehend any of their names yet i admire the thin blonde lady, the guy with the curly hair and the guy with the handicap. i do no longer in easy terms like the black lady whose total concern seems to be yelling or the pregnant lady she develop into struggling with with (who of direction is long previous now).
