That would in no way excuse him for his actions. This guy was on CNN saying that Foley is in no way a pedophile because he had no sexual contact with a minor. His texts messages and emails were very explicit and posted to a child. Maybe not physical but diffenitely sexual contact.

Could not agree with you more! At no point in time he has said " i am sorry for having preyed on minors, for filling their heads with garbage, for having online sex with children." That is what he needs to be talking about and getting help for, not going on and on about his alleged drinking problem or being molested in the past. A combination of past abuse and alcoholism may explain his tendencies, but do not excuse them. Being gay has nothing to do with it. People who like to be sexually involved with minors are not even "straight" or "gay" they are in their own little category. Its called sexually deviants or pedophiles.

If Foley can be made out to be a victim, it will soften attitudes against him, and serve to abate some of the backlash aginst Republicans in general. They are casting about frantically right now, trying to find ways to save some of the people whose jobs are in immediate jeopardy because of this scandal, and those whose jobs will be in jeopardy come November.

Regardless of whether or not it is true, or whether or not it is ever followed up to the point of determining the truth, making Foley a victim of sexual abuse, an alcoholic, and gay is actually a master stroke. He becomes a fallible, imperfect human, struggling to overcome his demons, rather than a monster who uses his position of power to prey upon children.

With such a spin placed on his behavior, many will find ways, while adamantly placing the blame on his shoulders, to make excuses for his weakness, burdened as he is by such overwhelming personal flaws. In this way, his party may be able to escape taking any significant blame for enabling him.

This type of thing came up a few years back when a bunch or psychologists got together and decide that if a person had been victimized in their youth, they are more likely to victimize other people. It has been used as a defense to make people feel sorry for the perpetrator. I feel sorry for the guy that he was a victim, but being a victim doesn't excuse your actions.

No it would not excuse his actions, but of course his entire past is going to be brought up, because it is good news. There have got to be some very busy reporters out there right now.

His lawyer is heading this spin on things to begin a 'defense' for Foley and try to have the public sympathize and 'understand' his actions.

It's an effort to downsize the full implications of his actions.

You know.... Republicans always try to find something or someone else to blame for their actions rather than take full responsiblity.
