I have 5 dwarf hammies, (i do not breed), and i went to petco one day to get a new water bottle, and they had a "Hamster Ball Derby" I thought awwww, i want to enter my hammie. I went online, and petco's ALL around the COUNTRY are hosting the Derby, where there is a little track, and a hamster ball is placed on the track. At MSN Hamster groups, people are saying that their hamster was in that derby and that they have wet-tail from the commotion, they take the sick hamsters from the back and race them, so one lady said she swears her hamster has mites, he has been scratching ever since she left that derby! This is outragous! if you are going to own a petshop, YOU NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THE ANIMALS. Hamsters shouldn't have mites and 'be in the back' ANYWAY! I am glad that i didn't enter my hamster, but to you approve of this? i do not think it is humane! putting an innocent hamster on a track and there's screaming, yelling, cheering, and the poor hamster doesn't know what to do!!

I'm not saying that they are being tormented by being on a track, i am saying they are in a petco's ball, and other hamsters and pooping and taking a whizz in it. I am thinking of buying a track so that i can find my hamsters easily when i am cleaning out their cages.

i agree with you, though thats pretty sad about the hamsters on the derby. i use to work at one of the Petcos in california for about a year. i didnt work at the rodent section, but when i had to close in sometimes they had me go and close the rodent sectoin as well and i remmeber clearly, going behind the cages, the areas were pretty stinky and not that sanitary as it should be. i remmeber i would check their water before closign and seeing the water inside the water bottles, almost all of them were dirty....you know what that means? it meant that the people that worked in that section REfilled the water NOT throwing the water inside and i wondered....how many times did they have to do that to make the water go that bad and not clear? it was a sad issue. sometimes, in the room, there would be one loose around the flooring and you can guess where theyd get the termites among the others.

i dont want to give Petco a bad name, as Petco alone did many charities and pet adoptions the entire year i was there, and plus i dont want to speak to ALL of the Petcos in the US. i mean it could have been that the manager there didnt do a good job at all assigning and giving clear and direct instructions to the people who worked in the rodent sectinos, so...it can be the total opposite at another Petco in the same town.

anyways, thats sad to hear about those little hamsters that got sick, good thing you kept yours at home. hope my answer gives you a little insite on how some petcos, or literally any pet store can be.

Petco is infamous for not taking good care of their animals, especially rodents since they are mostly sold as feeders. Hamsters and other rodents can get sick from other things too such as shows or events or even bringing your hamster over to your friend's hamster. If anyone brings their hamster to an event with other hamsters, they should expect to be exposed to all kinds of things, and they should know they are risking their hamsters health in doing so.

Some hamsters may enjoy this type of thing, but it is probably a better idea to just leave them at home where they are safe.

I think you are over thinking this just a little.
First, do you know for sure that the hamsters were sick? That doesn't make sense that they would use sick ones. Pet stores are always under fire for not caring for the animals properly, especially the larger stores like Petco. They wouldn't deliberately open themselves up to that sort of bad publicity.
Did the animals look scared? Usually hamsters ignore all things human anyway, unless we are holding a treat. They probably didn't care either way.
Hamsters like those balls. And the track just means they go in a certain direction. It's not a torture chamber.
Hamsters are PETS. Pets are here to entertain us. Unless they are being out right harmed, what is the problem?
If you were so concerned, why didn't you complain?

The best way to show your non-support is to not shop there. I worked at Petco for two years. It was horrible, to many animals were made to live in a small space. Wet tail and mites happened all the time. I would not recommend taking your animal to any event were it may pick up a disease. I,ve been at PetSmart for two years now and the animals come first. We are allowed to a take animals to the vet and take care of their needs. When I was at Petco, I had to take them to the vet on my time off or they wouldn't be taken. I wasn't even a manager. It was miserable. The best key to solving this problem is education.

*sigh* Its Petco, what do you expect? Most of them only work there to make a few easy bucks when they are in college. Honestly, if you love animals, then why are you working at pet store? Why not go all the way and become a vet?
