I was working for this company which I found on CareerBuilder and they have been paying me with counterfeit checks. I recently found this out and tried to contact them but their number is not in service and their email account does not exist. My account is now negative about $1200. I don't know what to do. Is there any way I can report them or find them? Any piece of advice would help. Please no negativity as I have been through enough as it is. Can I go to jail? I have all of the emails and everything. Please help

Let me guess ... it was a "work at home" job, right? Were you depositing checks in exchange for a percentage?

Were they in the United States? If so, file a police report immediately and file a complaint with the board of labor for your wages.

Do you know their tax ID number or employer ID number? Their address? Anything?

You are going to have to pay back the money. If the police think you had anything at all to do with it, they will arrest you. That's why you had better start filing reports with you as the victim asap.

I'm sorry, but you are pretty much screwed.

Go to your bank, and report fraud on your account, by way of counterfeit checks being written against you. If you tell them your situation, then they will most likely refund some overdraft charges. You can also contact careerbuilder, and report this company to them, and try to get some info. Other than that, you can prevent it from happening again by instructing your bank either check the funds on the check, or if they can't, to place a 7 to 11 day check hold on your account until the check clears. If it doesn't then you wouldn't have had access to the money anyway, and your account will be unaffected.

What they are doing is a federal offense. Contact the police immediately. Do you know where they are? If you worked for them, was it in a building? Are they still there? You didn't say, but it sounds like you worked for them without ever meeting them. Was this some kind of internet scam?

You might end up liable for the money, but start by getting the authorities involved right away !!!

I would contact Careerbuilders too. They may be able to help track the perpetrators down.
