My Garage door opener just hums... doesn't lift the door. The light on the opener turns ON, which means there is POWER. The Remotes as well as the door opener on the wall all function same. I can manually lift the door.

Any suggestions welcome!
thanks,
- murthy

Could be the gears are out and the motor is running but not moving the door. Take the cover off and if a bunch of white stuff falls out, the gears are gone. You can get gear kits for around 25-30 dollars depending on which brand you have

odu83 may be right, but it could just be jammed. Check the linkage between the motor and the release latch at the top of the door. If there is nothing jamming the linkage, then I would go with a burned out motor. I am throwing my 2 cents in only because I know that an electric motor can also hum when it is in the PROCESS of burning out. Putting power into it without letting it "move" will do it. Hope the two of us helped. Too bad Yahoo doesn't have any way to post direct feedback to answers!!!!!

The motor is burned out so you get a hum and no movement. Are you disengaging the opener when you lift the door. If yes, you need a new opener.

Make sure the chain or belt is not in a bind,I think i would disengage the chain to see if the motor will turn without the chain if the motor still hums with no load on it then i think it is the mother too

Your lifter probably got caught on the car as it was coming in. Just pull down the cord, and it will re-engage. Hit the door opener so that the track re-engages. Then hit it again, and it should work. Hope this helps.

its not locked in, there is a lock on the piece that goes back and forth on the chain, it usually has a rope tied to it just lock it downand turn on the remote again and it should lock in place
