It's easier to maintain a good character - reputation - then to try to get it back after it have been ruined.
For example, if you are known as an honest person all you have to do to remain known as an honest person is to be honest. But if something happens where you are cast as a liar after being known as an honest person, it will be almost impossible for people to believe ever again that you are honest because people always want to believe the worst. They also tend to gossip about the bad instead of the good.

Ok, example: Joe is a nice guy. Everyone likes Joe. He goes to work every day, provides for his family, Church every Sunday, don't drink or smoke or curse. This is Joe's character. One night, Joe goes to a strip bar, gets drunk, comes home and curses his wife out for letting herself go, then passes out. Now, don't you think it is going to be hard to recover from that and prove to everyone that that isn't who he really wants to be just by starting to go to church again every Sunday? I hope that makes sense.

IT is hard to restore some things, including the way you act and live. Once you lets say commit a crime, it may damage yourself and not just the way people see you because there could be a tendency to commit negative acts once again.

It means that if you do something to discredit your reputation, it's going to take a long time to build it back up.

It is just like your reputation .... it is easier to keep your reputation than to try to regain it after you have tarnished it.
