Most states have specialty stores with items made in that state ... i.e. "Made In Oregon" store ... names may vary ... do a search on the state/s you will be visiting.
Visit areas where artisans sell their goods, generally these will be local to the area. Also many small botique type stores carry items that are made by local artists, artisans, and craftspeople. Some ideas are handcrafted jewelry, items made from things found in the area. Another good idea is native american goods.
It's really not that difficult to find things if you know how and where to look and what to look for. Ask where ever you go where there are things made in the local area.
Have fun!
