There is this simple rule that all warring parties have to have. They have to have the drive and motivation to win, and this is all brought about by their leaders. It is just like having a pep rally before the big High school game and the players go in thinking that they shall prevail. Same thing here except it took many years and many lives before they figured out that they would not win. Also there is the fact that they were not given all the facts about what they were up against. And this still happens today. Look at Vietnam. We were a superior power to the Vietnamese, however they had been fighting for many years and knew how to use the tunnels and the jungles to their advantage. But then again, we were not at WAR, just a police action that took over 50,000 lives. Sorry, I got carried away.

Neither side believed that the other would be 'that serious' about leaving/restoring the union.
