Types of Communication by Teachers

As teachers we sometimes engage in Conversation: "So, what did you do last night?" "I like your sweater" "How was the game last night?"

We use language to communicate Directions: "Take out your math book and turn to page 150." "Time to line up for recess" "The book report is due on Friday"

We use language to communicate Instruction: "Reading for information requires that we have some idea about what information we are looking for - how can we do this? Prior knowledge - we can ask ourselves questions like: "what do I already know about electricity?"

We also use language to communicate Corrections: "Suzy, stop playing with that and get to work" "Billy, hands to yourself!" "Sean, it is time to get your book out now."

Finally, we use language to communicate Reinforcement: "Great job thinking that problem through." "You were really listening during that story - I could tell." "Wow! Where did you come up with that great idea?"
