I was taught using the King Henry Died Basically Drinking Chocolate Milk way:
King=kilo
Henry=hecta
Died=deca
Basically=base (meter,gram)
Drinking=deci
Chocolate=centi
Milk=milli
So you start at whatever you know. 5kg. Put your finger on kilo. To get to grams, which is a base, you move 3 to the right (down). So that would equal 5000 grams. Understand? Hope I helped. It also helps if you write the King Henry thing out horizontally on a piece of paper.
