Mercury is silver, always, always. Any other color is alcohol dyed.
Not the drinking stuff (sorry) but a heavier, more poisonous alcohol.

sometimes its mercury, sometimes its alcohol. most thermometers use alchol now for safety reasons since mercury is poisonous.
