How dry is the soil? If it's bone dry, then you need to rewet it. To do this, put the pot into a container where you can add water up to halfway up the pot. Pour water in the top, only add 1 tsp of dishwashing liquid to a quart of water. The soap acts as a surfactant, causing the water to "stick" to the soil particles. Pour it in, let it sit in the water until the soil is saturated, then remove it.

When soil gets too dry, it shrinks, pulls away from the pot. That's why I does that.

When the soil begins to dry out water thoroughly by immersing 3/4 of the flower pot in water till the soil on top becomes moist. This way one is sure that the soil and plant have absorbed enough water. In the winter water only once every 1 - 2 months.
When you watered from the top resulting in a fast run-off the soil was probably too dry to take up any water.

Good drainage is essential to jade plants, so generally speaking, you would want the water to drain out and not collect around the roots. But if the water runs right through the root mass without properly dampening the soil, it is probably time to repot the plant. Sometimes the roots fill the pot so completely that the pot is essentially filled with roots and very little soil. If that's the case, repot with fresh soil in a larger pot.

there are holes in the pot to let excess water run out so your plant doesn't drown or sit in too moist soil and get mouldy. try not to put to much water in the pot, and you can also put a dish under the pot to catch any excess that runs through.

re-pot it, or take a tooth pick and gently poke it around in the dirt to loosen the soil. you soil has dried and made a crust w/ little tunnels all through the dirt, it runs so fast it has no chance to absorb the water.
