112 halved = 56
56 divided by 4 = 14
14 x 3 = 42

length = 42, width = 14

divide 112 / 8 this gives you equal measurements, based on the width. so the width is 14 x 3 gives you the length :)
The equal measurements are determined by since there are two width ends of a rectangle and two lengh sides 3 times the widths value. Therefore finding equal measurements provide the simplest solution. The perimeter is all sides measured and added together.

Width = x
Length = 3x

Perimeter = 2 times the length + 2 times the width

2(x) + 2(3x) = 112
2x + 6x = 112
8x = 112
x= 14

Width = 14
Length = 3 times 14 = 42

It's always easier to draw a picture when it comes to word problem with shapes.

Let the width by w and the length will be 3w.

perimeter = 2 (w + 3w) = 112

Solve the above equation, and you will find out w. Hence, multiply that answer by 3 to get the length.

The easiest way to do this is set the short side as 'x' and the long side as '3x'.

x+3x=112/2

The short side plus the long side is half of the perimeter so you have to divide the perimeter by 2.

4x=56

x=14
3x=42

the dimensions of your rectangle are 14 by 42.
