I want to be a cartoonist as a career, but I don't know which jobs I should start with. Does anybody else know? I'm 17 and I've never been employed before.

You want to begin now? Interesting choice.

You should consider becoming an intern at a professional cartoon drawing center. Look up such programs associated with big name companies, including Disney, Nickelodean, etc. or perhaps a Manga studio.

Degree wise, I don't know if there is one specifically for cartooning, but perhaps there is one for graphic design, and definitely for artistic design, so definitely consider that.

You have just asked the same question in other format and I have replied to it besides other worthies. I need only repeat my reply as follows

Honestly I do not understand what is the difficulty in drawing up a resume. In fact you need not file a resume at all. Your cartoons will be your best introduction. They will speak all that is necessary for you. Just give below the cartoon your contact address. My friend who is actually almost an illiterate but a good cartoonist got his job on the spot.

You deeds speak more about you than your words. These resumes etc. are for the run of the mills.

You can start by cartooning for your school newspaper. After you have that on your resume, then you can move on to a college newspaper (whenever you go, which I'm assuming you are, plus bring references from teachers/newspaper editor). If you go to a large school, and succeed as a cartoonist, that's a huge thing on your resume. After that, (and after a few references from editors, professors, etc.) You should move on to your local city newspaper. After working that out for a few years, and networking, and building connections, and after you've built up a fat resume, you can try to go out for the Times or Newsweek, etc. If you don't want to do something like that, and want to be published, take your fat resume (and obviously a book, or whatever you've started on your book) and go to a big publisher.
Whenever you're working for college or city newspapers, don't expect to live off of that, so that's where the being in college comes in. If you're really serious, you may want to consider journalism as a major. Good luck to you!
