She may be pulling your leg!The spelling basque is correct. Basically, it is a corset, usually `boned` to give tightness and shape,it is fastened either at the front with hooks and eyes, or at the back with laces. It goes around the body, under the bust and is fastened down past the waist and ends just over the hip. It was fastened very tightly and made the wearer sit with a straight back. She would have found it difficult to move because of the restricting whale bones in the corset, when wearing this garment the woman would have looked quite shapely. She would have found it extremely difficult to breathe. In the middle ages these were worn over the dress, they did the same job as before, but now they had become an item of fashion to be seen.
They have remained in or on the fringe of fashion for nearly 600yrs.The more sexier styles which came in during 19th and 20th centuries also had suspenders hanging from the bottom part, two over each thigh, one at the front and one at the back. Their purpose was to hold up the stockings worn by the woman. Photographs of women dressed like this were used on calenders etc. they were called `pin-ups` The garter belt was also a separate item of dress, it went around the waist and had four suspenders. Through the ages some men have found these garments, pleasing to the eye when worn by a woman. However, they are not in the least pleasing to the eye, when worn by a guy!!!
