My son had that.... but his was oozing yellow stuff from it.... and it was a little red all around... i brought him to the doctor, they said just damp it with warm water and a clean cloth and sent me home. A few days later, the red spot was getting bigger, i said to myself this is NOT normal, i brought him back to his doctor, when they saw it, they said oh no, they rushed me to the children's hospital, he was there for 6 days getting anti-biotics... the tests he had to go through were horrible and because he was so small, i cryed the whole time.... but after 3-4 days of the medicine it started clearing up... thank god... because of the anti-biotics he got a little yeast infection on his bum, but that cleared up also with a cream the doctor gave me...
The infection he got apparently was normal to doctors, they've seen it many times... and it wasn't my fault they said... because their immune systems are not mature yet, even the littlest of dirt, from a diaper can trigger it, if i were u i wouldn't wait, I would go the the ER right away.... the first time i went if they would have given me a cream right away, it would have spared me 6 days in the hospital and all those awful tests.... good luck....
PS... don't use alchol... they used to use that before but the doctor told me not to...

the smell you smell may be normal, if there is no discharge oozing from the area. try to keep it clean with alcohol. keep the area dry. also try and fold the diaper inward under the navel. this way air can get to the area. and give your baby lots of kisses this usually heels anything. don't worry! if there is oozing or bleeding call your pediatrician. but i had three babies and as long as there are none of these signs oh and fever your beautiful bundle of joy is fine. ENJOY!!!!!!

Most doctors will say it is normal.
Take a q-tip with alcohol on it and swab it a few times a day and by a few I mean a lot. Make sure you get every crease. If it doesn't go away within a week you may need to ask the doc. what else you could clean the navel with. My daughters was like that but it stopped after a couple days with alcohol.

Yes it will go away. The belly button is still an open wound even though the cord fell off, and it's still healing. If it still smells in, say a week or two, then you should probably be concerned.

Just make sure you are cleaning the naval area with the alcohol and clean it after every diaper change. In my opinion it is best to use a q tip and go down and around the belly button very good. If the smell is still there after a few days and has not calmed down I would take the baby to the doctor.

Go to the peds, the cord area should not smell at all. Don't use alcohol, it will just burn. The ped may want to put silver nitrate on it to get it to heal up right.
The peds did the silver nitrate for my son and he is all healed up now and got his first tub bath the other day.

There shouldn't be a smell coming from that area, odor is a sign of infection. Do not take any chances with you newborn, take her to the doctor asap.

I shouldnt smell infected, or be oozing anything. If it does take her in and make sure its not growing bacteria.
It probably does have a smell if you stick your nose on it, it was a piece of dead dry skin that was there and fell off.

Unless theres oozing or any abnormal fluids coming out of the navel there should be no cause for concern. btw what do you prefer in belly buttons? innie or outies?
