I heard somewhere that there's some software available to let you know, but I have never seen it.

Actually, I should have been more specific: Is there any way to know if the person OPENED AND READ my email, if they don't reply?

There are email programs that will send you an email once the recipient opens the message.

Lotus Notes is one, I think the option is show receipt.

The other ones are for Mac only, such as CE Mail.

There use to be a place on AOL mail that you could check to receive a receipt if your email was received and opened. Don't know if that's still in effect because I don't use AOL.

Whenever an email doesn't reach it's recipient you should get a message that the mail wasn't delivered for whatever reason. Otherwise, you can assume that it reached it's address. As far as I know there isn't a way to tell if the email was opened and read.
Although the spammers certainly do know when their junk stuff has reached it's target.

If you didn't get a "failure" message, then it probably reached their mailbox. Whether they have actually READ it is another story, and no way you can tell unless you send it with a confirmation request or tracer of some sort.
