Okay:

Fill the 8 and the 5. Mike's now got 13 litres. Empty 3 litres from the 8 into the empty 3 litre container and discard. Mike's now got 5 litres in the 8 and 5 litres in the 5. Empty another three. Mike's now got 2 in the 8 and 5 in the 5. Empty 3 from the five. Mike's now got 2 in the 8 and 2 in the 5. Combine the 2 litres from the 5 litre container into the 8 litre container. The 8 litre container should now have 4 litres of substance in it.

Confusing, I know, but I hope it helps.

This sounds like there can be multiple solutions, but here's our stab at it:

1) Fill up the 5 liter container and use it to fill the 3 liter container all the way up, leaving the 5 liter one with 2 liter remaining.
2) Dump the two units into the empty 8 liter one.
3) Dump out the 3 liter container and repeat steps 1 and 2 and you should have four liters in the 8 liter container.

I have a feeling there are more instructions to this problem then we're being led on to believe

I would say that you fill the 3 liter cantainer TWICE and pour it into the 8 liter container, Then fill the 3 liter for a THIRD time and you will be left with exactly 1 liter in the 3 liter container. Pour that into the 5 liter container and then fill the 3 liter container again and pour the 3 liters into the 5 liter container to make exactly 4 liters!

this is simliar to another question last night.
Write more clearly, but....
Fill the 5-litercan, then pour it into the 3. You're left with 2. PUt that into the 8 liter can, do it again, you have 4.
OR
fill the 3 liter can, pour it into the 5. Fill the 3 liter can again, pour ias much as you can into the 5, you're left with 1. Pour out the water from the 5. Put that 1 liter into the 5 liter, fill the 3 liter again, join it with the one from the 5 liter can, and you don't even have to use the 8-liter can :)

Fill the 5 container to the max then dump it into the 3 container until it is full. Whatever is left in the 5 is going to be 2 litters so dump that into the eight litters. Then repeat. 5-3=2 then you dump it into teh countainer of 8 litters and you have a total of four.

FILL THE 5 LITER BUCKET FULL WITH WATER
POUR ALL WATER FROM 5 LITER INTO 3 LITER UNTIL 3 LITER IS FULL
2 LITER OF WATER IS LEFT IN THE 5 LITER BUCKET
DUMP OUT THE 3 LITER BUCKET
NOW POUR THE REST OF THE 2 LITER WATER FROM 5 LITER BUCKET INTO EMPTY 3 LITER BUCKET
3 LITER BUCKET HAS 2 LITERS OF WATER and 1 LITER OF AIR....
NOW FILL THE EMPTY 5 LITER BUCKET WITH WATER AGAIN AND POUR INTO THE 3 LITER BUCKET UNTIL 3 LITER BUCKET IS FULL
BECAUSE THERE IS 1 LITER OF AIR IN 3 LITER BUCKET, ONLY 1 LITER OF WATER WILL BE REQUIRED TO FILL 3 LITER BUCKET
LEAVING 5 LITER BUCKET WITH 4 LITERS OF WATER

HA I DIDNT EVEN USE 8 LITER BUCKET....MOO!!
