I think that venturing a layperson's opinion on this subject is useless. Mental health experts have not been able to satisfactorily identify specific causes for pedophilia. I was able to find the following excerpt in an article from Psychology Today:

Causes:
The causes of pedophilia (and other paraphilias) are not known. There is some evidence that pedophilia may run in families, though it is unclear whether this stems from genetics or learned behavior.

Other factors, such as abnormalities in male sexual hormones or the brain chemical serotonin, have not been proven as factors in the development of paraphilias or pedophilia. A history of childhood sexual abuse is also a potential factor in the development of pedophilias but this, too, has not been proven.

Behavioral learning models suggest that a child who is the victim or observer of inappropriate sexual behaviors learns to imitate and is later reinforced for the behavior. These individuals are deprived of normal social sexual contacts and thus seek gratification through less socially acceptable means. Physiological models focus on the relationship between hormones, behavior, and the central nervous system with a particular interest in the role of aggression and male sexual hormones.

In the majority of cases, it's a sexual preference. Not to say it's a legitimate one, obviously, but you know, some people are born liking women, some people are born linking men, and some are born liking children. They're the hardest ones to deal with because counselling may not be able to override that desire.

Also, as has been stated, a lot of abusers were themselves abused.

long ago i took an abnormal psychology class. the theory then was:
1. pedophiles were sexually abused as children.
2. control over someone.
3. a physical disorder called "miniature genitalia.

It has to be some combo of nature and nurture. Plenty of people have one or the other, and aren't pedophiles. I imagine once you have the "right" combo for this, will power comes in to play too.

Bratz dolls and young girls dressing (and acting) like whores!!.... On the serious side, i think it's a power thing....The abusers feel in control ,they feel powerful, this excites them as they themselves are weak individuals. ...their victims are young, weak, vulnerable victims that will listen to their abuser when no one else usually gives them the time of day.
