I am 66 and diabetic, which seems well controlled by Metformin 850 3 times daily. I eat a healthy diet, which does not include meat. Can anyone tell me why I sometimes stumble about like a drunk (I dont drink), become extremely dizzy when I stand up from sitting, and am frequently unable to express myself to a point where I utter gibberish for a few seconds??? My blood pressure is under control, and I take Atenolol.

Hiya, I'm also a diabetic controlled by Metformin. You don't say if you blood test, but if you do and your blood glucose is below 4 this could be the reason. If you don't blood test it may be worth your while investing in a cheap machine (Boots have them on special offer at the moment for just £3.99). I would say that your dose of Metformin is quite high and it's quite possible this could be reduced if you are eating a balanced diet. Try eating more carbohydrate and if the symptoms stop then its definitely that your metformin dose is too high. Please do not alter the dose of your medication without medical advice, that could do more harm that good!!!!!
If it's not due to low blood sugar, it may be worth going to the doctor for a check up as it could also be a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA). This is when the blood supply to the brain temporarily is interupted and causes confusion and symptons similar to your description.
You should not be taking atenolol, its a beta blocker and not recommended for diabetics. I was on that and when I was diagnosed I was changed to Lisinopril so you need to have that reviewed very soon! The symptons could also be caused by taking the atenolol when you really should not be. Again, do not change or stop taking the atenolol without medical advice!!!
To sum up...see the doctor.
If you would like to chat some more on this I am on yahoo messenger under the same name as my name here.

I kind of confuse a lot of people too. Not because I have a disorder or something. I'm perfectly aware that I'm confusing people. I answer conversations based on what the other speaker is trying to imply. I'm a cynic and I'm paranoid about people's motives when they bring out a topic that is suspicious in any way. So instead of giving them direct answers, I answer what *I think* they're trying to imply (e.g. when someone talks about an exam question and I see the person glancing at me in a weird way as if to imply that he/she saw me do something weird during the examination--not that I really did something weird intentionally--I answer him/her in a manner that would explain myself). I know it's weird but I myself couldn't remember exactly when and how I became *this* paranoid. Also, when the one I'm talking to asks me something relatively personal, I avoid giving him details about myself because I'm an extremely private person. So I blah blah blah instead of giving a direct answer. Sometimes too, when a person talks about something that reminds me of something else, I get lost in thought about that memory and blurt out something so out of context. Sometimes my thoughts race too. I also talk slow sometimes because of this "oh wait, I remember a situation related to this in some way" and I briefly think about that for a moment and go back to the original topic. I'm aware it's kind of irritating but I don't care what other people think. Haha. I don't know exactly what the problem is with your coworker but maybe that just has something to do with his personal issues. He may or may not be aware of it, but if he is, chances are he's deliberately doing the "confusing them" thing. Leave him be or talk to him about it (not in a way that's tactless). Avoid him if you don't feel like talking to him.

My father had this once. The doctor's couldn't figure out what it was until he passed out in a meeting one day. It was a raging inner ear infection. Good luck.

It's the atenalol, my mother has the same problem, she takes atenalol. I have had this problem through taking propranolol. This is the common denominator no matter what the medics say, they will say that the benefits outweight the down sides of the medication.
