can someone explain why athletes need to eat lots of complex carbohydrates during training????????????????????????????

Athletes need lots of carbs, because when carbohydrates are metabolized they become energy. THEY NEED ENERGY!!!

Sugars and starches are energy foods. Actually so are fats, however, they take way to long to break down into usable pieces.

Starches are 100's of times larges than sugars (both have many different kinds, simple to complex) thus have the potential to supply much more energy. This is one reason, if you do not do something to use them (carbs) up you can put on the pounds. They contain so much energy your body needs to put some into storage for future use.

Complex carbs supply not only a good deal of energy, but can do it much longer than the faster, but shorter lived sugars.

Go get an "A".
