I have a 1999 Ram and the a/c blows through the vents located right under the windshield only. It used to blow through the front vents but whenever I stepped on the gas, it would blow through the windshield vents. Now it completely stopped blowing through the front vents. Even when I set it to blow on my legs, it only blows through the windshield vent.

Anyone know what's wrong and how much it'll cost to fix?

Federal law requires that ALL heaters and A/C units must default to DEFOG if there is any control function failure. It sounds like you have lost vacuum control somewhere, either under the hood, or perhaps a vacuum connection under the dashboard.
Start the truck and LISTEN very close for a pronounced "hiss". Under the dash is somewhat difficult, so cut a piece of vacuum hose about 4' long and place one end in your ear, and use the other end for a "sound sniffer" to help locate it. If you can't find it, chances are that the control head is defective.

Good Luck

I got a 2000 and it does the same thing. The vacuum line going to the climate controls has come loose or is broken. It is a black plastic line going through the firewall. Usually on the passenger side next to where the A/C lines go through. Or it could be loose inside. Crank it up and see if you can hear a hissing noise. When you find the leak then fix it and your problem should be gone. As far as the stepping on the gas and it doing it; stupid dodge should have used a vacuum can for those times when (during accel.) vacuum would be low to prevent that from happening.

There is a small pancake style check valve in the vaccum line under the hood going inside to the controls Dodge makes a larger replacement check valve a cannister type to correct this problem

The thing to check for first is a vacuum leak from the engine to the vent selector switch. When it goes to defrost only this is usually the problem.

The switch that controlls this vaccumn opperated. It has a vaccumn leak. Check the houses coming in from engine compartment into and through the fire wall. There is a crack or broken hose.
