It seems like every generation looks back at past generations and is saddened or concerned by what they see. I am in the field of psychology now and often wonder what future generations will say about my field. What do you see as the major issues with how we treat the mentally ill? What will future generations of psychologists think when they look back on what we have done?

Considering the last la botany was performed in 1962, this is a valid series of statements and questions. la botany was performed to "control" as medication was not a resource. As to the questions; of course we will be looked at as uneducated pagans in the field. You are dealing with the only part of the body yet to be completely understood. Unfortunately the US is not as advanced in studies as the UK (they are generally 5 years ahead of us and than the FDA is slow to open new meds to the population). In the last 10 years alone we've made great jumps and major failures. A compressed response; of course most done will be ridiculed, this is history repeating itself as the field grows. Just remember as you enter this field , it's the passion to constantly learn, keeping on top of new studies and not being compassionate but better clinical in you decision to treat a patient which will increase the success rate. You are not a social service worker; rethink your questions and ask yourself , "Why were these questions all about my mental health being in a comfort zone".

I don't mean to be rude but having studied the field of psychology many years ago to gain understanding about my fellow man and be able to do something to change and improve
the conditions of life, I found this subject to be of no use or value and in many ways destructive since it pretends to be a
science, but is in fact a bunch of confused unproven speculation, and theories.
"Modern" psychology has really only been in existence for the past 100 years.
(Since Wundt and the German "man = rat/ frog" theories)
It is my hope that actual workable knowledge will prevail and this subject will die out or become something that represents it's name:
PSYCHE Greek meaning SOUL or SPIRIT
OLOGY Latin LOGOS meaning STUDY OF

My question to you would be: What has this subject done that has helped ?
I see no evidence around me in society that things are improving...... quite the reverse in fact. War, crime, drug abuse,
illiteracy, deteriorating health, less freedoms , more force, more police.......

You have no understanding of the nature of the mind or spirit so how can you possibly "treat" or help anyone without this.
The conceit of the pretense continues to amaze me.

I think Martin Seligman and the Positive Psychology movement will be a strong force in the future of psychology as a science. Especially if there arises a theory that synthesizes both the "disease" model of contemporary psychology and proactive approach of Seligman, et. al.

that we have rushed to start most kids on drugs to control their behavior. That starting children on drugs will have disastrous implications, when all of these kids get older and are no longer covered by an insurance policy of mom and dad.

Seeing millions of young people going through withdraw will be a sight to see for sure. It may spur a need for even more prisons that we have filled with people with substance abuse problems.

I think they will be horrified at the way psychology is used by corporate advertising and government to brainwash people and turn them into sheep.
