Unfortunately the days when a mechanic would repair a starter are long gone, today they simply replace parts.

Your Chevrolet Lumina is a very common vehicle so the part won't be that expensive, relatively speaking. If you have the repair done at any G. M. dealership, they will use a brand new factory part, and charge you a standard preset labor rate. The repair could cost more that you would imagine. You could use any good auto repair shop that will use an after market / rebuilt part and charge you the same preset labor rate, You save some on the cost of the part, and this is a perfectly acceptable repair. The least expensive option is to purchase the part from any reputable auto parts store (shop around, prices vary) and have someone install it for you, this particular repair isn't brain surgery. The one problem with this option is that some men (or gals) that claim to be mechanically inclined really aren't, so you would have to have faith in the ability of the person you chose. Hope this helps.

I would estimate the cost for parts and labor at 125. dollars now take in mind what size motor and if the vehicle requres a high torque starter wich they will run a little more I believe most luminas came out with 3.1 and 3.8 litre motors nothing spectacular there so the starter should only run around 45.00 -65.00 and labor

If I were you I would keep the 93 Lumina and go out and buy something a little more reliable. Perhaps, something with 35-50k miles. Keep this car until you can get your current car fixed. After it is fixed, you have two options. Keep the Lumina and the new car or keep the Lumina and sell the new car. Also, you could buy the new car for $1000 and then sell it for $2500. Hope this helps and Good Luck with your car!

Starter's about $40.00. Labor's $60.00 an hour.
A professional mechanic can change a starter in 7-18 minutes.
They'll keep your car in for 2 hours because they don't want you know how easy of a job it is.
It'll cost about $160.00

Considering parts and labor, I would imagine something < $200.00. But I am out in California.

Good Luck
