Dylan's words are beguiling, bewiling, entrancing, intriguing, perceiving, deceiving, horse sense and nonsense. The words, though, are at most half of the story.

In just one song, he created, with an unshakeable belief in what he could knock out of Al Kooper and a Hammond organ, one of the great soundscapes of musical history, one which inspired countless others and which remains an untouched touchstone of popular music – Like A Rolling Stone.

He wrote dozens of other melodies (let's pick one out of mid-air – I Dreamed Of St Augustine) which are up there with Jerome Kern, Claude Debussy, Hank Williams, Brian Wilson and the McCartney brothers (McCartney and McCartney, as they were better known, I believe)

I don't know Bob Dylan so if I talked about his "burden" it would be right that I would be ridiculed. But I'll risk it anyway.

His "burden", or one of them, is that journalists work in words, not music. Many of them are aware of Frank Zappa's dictum that writing about music is like dancing about architecture, but few pay heed and most gavotte around the Bilbao Guggenheim.

Who cares. Bob's the guv'nor and no mistake.

I got his new CD yesterday and I love it. It is Bob Dylan Modern Times. It is very mellow. (you can tell he's a little older) but I still love it.

Are there people who still see him as 'Judas' (mouthed at him in Manchester 40 years ago - despite Londoncentric media claiming it was in their wee town), or has he won over their admiration as time went on?
