I would say the best paying IT fields are programming and database administrator. Those are probably the most stressful too. Programming can also be outsourced very easily too. I am a desktop admin and make about 35k a year. My job is very kick back. I basically just sit at my computer all day and put the occasionally stick of ram into someone’s computer to make it faster. I have and AA degree in Computer networking and information technology.

Project (not people) Management.

Depends on what you want. This is a more people oriented job than hard core hacking. You have to do 'the shmoose" and go around and get status, then turn around and give status and also encourage people, and threaten some.

A related job is often called "systems engineer" someone who technially represents the company out at the customer.

These jobs are stressful, but a different kind of stress than sitting at the desk coding.

I was an untitled project manager. and we also did some advanced technology scouting. I began to really like it, and not really know that I was doing project management. But as one rises in the ranks, one can also get political enemies. I lost.

One of the things l liked best was the kaizen like things I initiated to keep help desk problems in the help desk. Anytime they had to call me for a soltution, we analyzed why they called, and most of the time they were able to handle the call later.

So I am now back doing technical things for a different company.

Network engineer, I was duped by taking a cis major in college, it's useless. The real jobs and the real money is in network engineer like cisco network engineer. College is fine, but if you take classes outside of college that gets you to pass the networking engineer exams for certification, that's better. As far as less stressful, wrong career path.
