Hi, I want to replace my mouse for my HP Pavilion Desktop Computer and I don't really know what to look for. I'm thinking of going for a wireless mouse but I don't know if those are good or just as good as the mice with cords. Also, I've heard about something called an optical mouse. I basically want a mouse that works smoothly since the one I have I need to constantly clean to keep it sliding along my mouse pad otherwise it sticks and then the cursor jerks across the screen. Can anyone give me some recommendations and hopefully a link to where to buy those recommendations? Thanks in advance. :)

you can buy them online or at any computer electronic store -future shop
A regular optical mouse uses an LED light in the optical engine, while a laser mouse uses a laser to track movement. The more dots per inch (dpi) a mouse can track, the more sensitive and accurate it is. A typical optical mouse tracks between 400dpi
and 800dpi, while laser mice track more than 2,000dpi.
Neither is really better; it all depends on your needs and preferences. Unless you're a gamer or a graphic artist with a need for precise movement, you'll probably find a 2,000dpi laser mouse too sensitive. Many gaming mice, however, allow you to switch sensitivity levels so that you have precision when you need it but can revert to 400dpi or 800dpi for regular mousing.

Besides their tracking speeds, laser mice work on nearly every surface, whereas optical mice may experience trouble tracking on black or shiny surfaces.

A mouse with a laser. If you need it cheaper: just any optical (ballless) mouse will do (unless you;re a fanatic gamer: then go for a laser mouse). Mice with balls are junk (if you still can find them).

Do NOT buy a wireless mouse (battery, reliability, environmental and steeling troubles, sometimes delay troubles), whatever others say. I tell you, you won't find it in anyway better compared to a wired mouse. The wire at a wired mouse is never in the way.

Depending on your desk on which the mouse resides, you still need a mousepad. Non-reflecting desk surface is best, but then generally the surface isn't smooth enough.

Although i hate Microsoft (at least their huge software insistency), they generally have wheel buttons which need less pressure on it (=better). And you can program the wheel button for anything you use much, like doubleclicking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse_(computing)#Laser_mice:
Games using mouses for input have such a degree of popularity that many manufacturers, such as Belkin, Logitech and Razer USA Ltd, make premium peripherals such as mice and keyboards specifically for gaming. Such devices frequently feature (in the case of mice) adjustable weights, high-resolution optical or laser components, additional buttons, ergonomic shape, and other features such as adjustable DPI.

ANY wireless optical mouse will do. I prefer Microsoft's Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0.

Compaq has a really nice scroll mouse for around $22-$25. It is compatible with any IBM compatible PC with one available PS/2 port and a 3 1/2 " floppy drive. One feature I really like is the hyper grid which allows you to quickly execute commonly used commands. Chec for it at Radio Shack. Is compatible with Windows 95,98,98SE,2000,ME,XP. You can scroll zoom or click. Modle #26-633A.
