Usually, the result of poor sound from a computer originate from your sound card. The output to your speaker is simply the end result of the sound card. I would recommend checking your connections, speakers, and drivers first. It everything is in order and you continue to have poor sound quality, upgrade to a new sound card.

You can buy and install a new sound card on to your computer, such as Creative's Sound Blaster. You can purchase one on Newegg (www.newegg.com). You don't need to buy the super sound cards, just a semi decent one will cost you about $40.00 USD. (http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=57)
