Wild Bill Hickok (actually James Butler Hickok, which doesn't have the same ring) was a gunfighter and sometime lawman. Some credit his shooting of Davis Tutt (1865) as being the first classic gunfight in the history of the west -- even though it actually took place in Springfield Illinois. He was shot in the back while playing cards in 1876; at the time he was holding a hand of aces and eights, known forever after as the "dead man's hand" as a result.

Buffalo Bill Cody (Born William Frederick Cody) was a cavalry soldier and later showman. He was something of a marketing genius.
