pointing to the left or to the right (I realise that the alignment is out but don't know the answer to the above).

it could be the rear pointing to the left or it can be a bent frame/swingarm/forks or triple trees.

Measure from the center of the axle forward to the swingarm bolt on both sides to see which way it's out of alignment.
A straightened out coat hanger with masking tape to mark the points works well, is fairly accurate, and cheap.

Dr. Evil may be closer to the truth than we'd all like to admit...

A good friend was having a similar issue and we chased all sorts of non existent gremlins only to find out later that his spine and hip was misaligned and he was unknowingly putting more pressure on one...uhhh, cheek, than the other when he sat.

Now, I'm not suggesting that you see a doctor or anything, but maybe you should, well, think outside of the box a bit? Just in case...

Are you riding on a back road side street or freeway if the road you are on isn't flat (and most roads aren't)the crown in the road will cause the bike to drift left toward the lower side of the road

I would check wheel alignment,or for a twisted frame.
