I think it would have to be Johnny Depp. He is such a versitile actor and he is not afraid to take odd or controversial roles.

Johnny Depp..he is a very versatile actor. He's played many diverse characters like Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean) J.M. Barrie (Finding Neverland...great movie =D) and even Willy Wonka (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory)

There have been so many great actors it is impossible to name the greatest. One of the hallmarks of a good actor is that he makes you unaware of the fact that he IS acting.
I would not put any of the names mentioned above anywhere near the category of great.
