Yes it is rare because they would have to throw across their bodies to get the ball to first. Picture the third baseman coming in on a bunt and has to throw it to first. They would have to spin around just to get in position. There have been a few, but none have been regular players. Mostly like a 20-1 game when they have no one left to play.

Don Mattingly played about 3 games at third base even though he was normally a left handed firstbaseman.

Mike Squires was a left handed firstbaseman for the White Sox years ago, he might have played third a little also, I know that he did play catcher.

I cannot say for certain... but I don't think there have EVER been any Third Basemen who threw left handed. It makes no sense. You need the glove to guard the line, NOT keep a man on base.

Darn good question though.
