Shearers were (and are) the people who shear the wool from sheep, to make into the wool that is used for fabrics, knitting wool and all that other cosy stuff that's so comfortable in the winter time.
The sheep shearers clip the sheep in the early springtime, so they have all summer to grow back the wool that will protect them during the winter.
After shearing, the wool has to be 'carded' -- this is done with a pair of paddles that look like ping pong bats, but have dozens of little barbs sticking up. The reason for carding is to straighten the wool out, so it can be handled more easily, and to remove all the 'stuff' that gets into it. Seeds, burrs, sticks, dried grass -- sheep are not neat and tidy creatures! Once the wool is carded it is spun, to convert it into a long thread, which can then be used to make fabric or to knit with.
Today, a few people still spin the wool using an old fashioned spinning wheel, but most of the spinning is done by machines.

I might be wrong, but I think that shearers had the task of shaving sheep. You know...getting the wool off so that it could be used for other things. I think they might even have been called 'sheep shearers'.
