it's not too complicated, the touch screen actually makes sense, most of the time. but getting the kid into a habit of washing their hands before they play might be harder. also, a frustrated child could possibly scratch the touch screen hard enough to leave marks. my cousin tore his ds up this way.
there are games to obviously NOT get, like dragonquest heroes, it's way too advanced for him
10-12 year olds have a hard time with pokemon mystery dungeon
big brain academy? waaay too hard. i'm 25, and even though i have platinum medals in all of the categories, it's way too hard to get a good enough score for it to stick. result? child will be frustrated
no mario game is simple enough for a child of that age.
you know the child, i assume, so you'll have to make the choices on the games, i guess. i can't say that i know any games i'd recommend for a child that age.
if it helps, my little brother is 7, physically, but mentally he's around 5. he loves mario 3. it's a gameboy advance game, but can be played on the DS.

Yes and no. It really all depends on the games. Some, he (I assume the 5 year old is a he, but she works in these situations too) will find amazingly fun. The touch screen control also works great, making it inviting to them. For a list of games that are good for 5 year olds, look below:
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team
Big Brain Academy (only $20!)
New Super Mario Bros.
Nintendogs (PERFECT game for little kids)
I gave my little 6 yr. old cousin my old DS, and its worked out great. New games come out, so let me know if you still have questions.
P.S. The DS Lite is pretty cheap, and youu might be able to find it packed in with another game.

My little bro is 5 years old, and he knows how to play the DS and Nintendo GameCube. Simple games of course.

I'm a hardcore 30-year old gamer, but I didn't get any game system until I was like, 15 I think. I think waiting until they were older is the best bet. Reading and stuff would be more appropriate.
