three guys walk in to a hotel and the owner tells then that he is going to charge them $30 for the night. They agree and each one piches in $10 they give it to the bell boy.then the owner tells the bell boy that he will only charge them $25 for the night so. the bell tells them that he will give them back $1 dollar to each and keep two they agree.
So if at the end each one piched in $9 an 9x3 =27
plus $2 dollars that the bell boy kept is a total of $29

what happend with the extra dollar?

it is plus two because we are adding the amount that the bellboy kept to see how much they really paid.wich at then end adds up two 29 or does it?

Trick question.
The owner charges $25 for the room, the bell boy gets $2 as a tip for a total of $27.
the 3 boys pay $9 each for a total of $27.

It all works out.

Originally they thought they were going to be charged $30 or $10 each so they gave the bellboy $30. Since the owner said the room would be $25 that means each should have paid $8.3333 and not $10 - a difference of $1.3333. When the bellboy gave back $1 each to the three people it meant that they were still owed $1 (3x .3333 rounded to the nearest dollar) which the bellboy pocketed with the other $2.

In other words, the bellboy kept $2 plus $1 (3 x .3333 rounded up to closest dollar) which is where it seemed a dollar was missing. Smart bellboy!!!

you are rationalizing the problem incorrectly.

if each paid $9, then a total of $27 was spent. of the $27 spent, $25 went to the room and $2 went to the bell boy.

do it the other way.

9*3=27 total $$ paid
-$2 (bellboy)
--------
$25
