Got home tonight to find my central heating pump leaking water from its main body and as a result the circuit breaker blowing on the supply to the central heating. I have isolated the wiring and also isolated the pump by turning off the valves on either side. The pump is a Grundfos 15-50 130 Selectric. Replacement looks straightorward. Can anyone please advise what has happened to this pump and any special things to do on replacement ...i.e will it need bleeding? Should I use PTFE tape on the threads or plumbers sealant? Can I use plumbing pliers to undo the 50mm nuts or is there a special tool? Why do these pumps fail like this? Any help will be really appreciated! Thanks

The leak on your pump could have been caused by a worn gasket. To change the pump, you will have to disconnect the electric cable to the pump . the best way to remove the pump itself, is to turn of the isolation valves and hold the valve on one side with your pump pliers. this is to stop the valve turning while you undo the big nut with a pair of 12inch stilsons. then do the same to the other big nut. use plumbers jointing paste only to the new washers that come with the new pump. you may have to vent air from the pump when you open the valves again.Read the instructions with the pump as how to do this.

Grundfos Pump Problems

Seems like the internal seals have gone and let water into the electrics. Don't buy a complete pump, just a bare pump without isolator valves, it's cheaper! It should come with two large fibre or graphite washers for the union nuts.Slacken the nuts with large water pump pliers, fit the new pump and washers and tighten. open valves and run for a few minutes, slacken chrome bleed screw until it drips. ** note instructions on orientation of shaft, bleed screw must not go below horizontal.** Do NOT use any tape or sealant it should not be required. If you cant get a Grundfoss any quality pump with same face centres will be ok as long as it has same flow rate/head.

Previous answers just about sum up how to change the pump but I'll just add,.... pumps do fail, in the end, ( you don't say how old your pump is) but in my opinion, replace with a grundfos, they are the best pumps around and will outlast any others that I know of.
